  • NC Senator Don Davis Awarded Champion For Children Award

Champion for Children Awardee Sen. Don Davis
Winston-Salem | North Carolina Senator Don Davis (D-Greene) was awarded the 2022 Champion for Children Award during the NC Association of School Administrators’ (NCASA) 2022 Conference on Educational Leadership. The Champion For Children Award, a prestigious honor given annually by NCASA to an individual demonstrating leadership in supporting and enhancing public education, was awarded this year to a state legislator whose collaborative efforts have been critical in helping NC public schools create a path forward from the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and into a brighter future.

Sen. Davis’ commitment to working across the aisle to effect positive legislative changes, as well as his willingness to seek critical feedback from education stakeholders, has enabled him to lead many positive changes for public education during a tough time in North Carolina’s history. Specifically, Sen. Davis was instrumental in negotiating a safe return to in-person learning for students last spring, while ensuring an array of virtual learning options remain available this school year. He should also be commended for his efforts in helping develop and approve a comprehensive state budget with a much-needed school employee compensation package for the first time in nearly four years. His common-sense approach to legislation and congenial manner continues to serve as an example of effective leadership for school leaders across our state.

Senator Don Davis (D-Greene) has served in the NC Senate for six terms and currently represents the constituents of District 5. Davis is a member of several legislative committees, including but not limited to committees focused on Education/Higher Education, Health Care, and Rules & Operations. Born and raised in Snow Hill, North Carolina, Don Davis has spent his life heeding the call to serve. He was elected the youngest Mayor of Snow Hill at age 29 and won his first state Senate election in 2008. Davis earned his B.S. in social sciences from the United States Air Force Academy and served in the United States Air Force for eight years, including stints as a flight commander and protocol officer. Davis later received his M.S. in administration from Central Michigan University, his M.A. in sociology from East Carolina University, and his Ed.D. in educational leadership from East Carolina University.
